The problem

Hollis closed its books on the fourteenth working day of each month. The board pack arrived after the board had met, so decisions were made on numbers that were six weeks old.

What we did

We wrote a close calendar with one owner for every task.

We moved bank and stock reconciliations to weekly, so month-end only has to check them.

We cut the board pack to two pages: the numbers, and what they mean.

What changed

The month now closes on the fifth working day. The board meets with last month’s numbers, and nobody in the finance team works late at month-end.
